Portugal Out Of The Euro On A Questionable Goal

portugal-versus-germany-quarter-final

Portugal confronted Germany in the first quarter final of this year’s Euro competition on Thursday June 19.

Germany started the game well with a couple of quick goals, but the third and winning goal from the German side created much controversy. Goal scorer, Michael Ballack, had clearly pushed Portuguese defender Paulo Ferreira out of the way to gain an advantage, and score the winner. The controversial goal created frustration for the Portuguese, including Manager Scolari, who had signaled to the referee of the offense to no avail.

Portugal controlled the second half of the game, both in possession and scoring chances but weren’t able to tie the game. Portugal played the beautiful game that the world has come to know, but weren’t able to capitalize against the methodical Germans, who were content on capitalizing on the counter attack, like Turkey in game 1. It is a disappointment to all Portugal fans, but the Portuguese can hold their heads up knowing that their team had never given up, and had come so close to scoring the tie on numerous occasions. It will be sad to see the best team in Euro 2008 not be there at the final.

that was bull

you are completely right about the refs winning the game for the Germans. I’m starting to dislike the game just because the real winners are never the winners. it’s all ruled by fifa and uefa and which country has more marketing power. it’s effen bull

WHAT CRAP! I’M SO TICKED OFF! Germany was NOT the better team yesterday. bought and paid for win.

4. Markus - June 20, 2008

just wanted to say that I agree with the officiating. It was lopsided for a German win ( I am German). That goal should not have counted, but I was very happy it did. That’s football, sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t.

I’m sorry Markus, but it seems that for Portugal, it never goes their way. Portugal always gets the short end of the stick in these tournaments. Bad officiating took them out in 2000, 2004 ( the final game was filled with dirt from the Greeks) 2006 the French dive and this year.. bad officiating again takes them out. it’s bull, and I’m tired of seeing undeserving teams continue in the tournament, based on bullsh*t.

Hey all,

Thanks for your comments. We too are sad that Portugal lost, but are proud that they played a strong game and gave it their best.

Like Miguel said, ‘nothing we can do about it’, we just need to look ahead and keep cheering them on….

:-)

yes the officiating sucked but nothing sucked more then Ricardo the Portuguese goalie. In my opinion the worst goalie in the tournament they could never win the Euro with this guy in net.

Hey Flash,

Agreed, Ricardo needs to go….
